Max snuck up on me. I started writing a story about impulsive, naïve Julia running away to the circus. And as I’m writing about the troupe’s plan “For freedom,” I got interrupted by this guy investigating a circus that disappeared, and I had no idea why he was there, let alone anything about a disappearing circus. Like “who is this guy?”
Yes, I was wondering right along with you and the cast of characters as he took over my story.
Max finds himself investigating the situation amidst all these powerhouse conniving characters and repeatedly missing the obvious in front of him. He’s in over his head. He comes into the middle of this magical story, and he’s looking for a rational explanation. Talk about the wrong story!
I was stuck in Julia’s timeline, unable to take the next step at that fateful campfire, until I figured out Max’s secret; then I realized what it’d been waiting for. Why I couldn’t write further yet. Why Max’s story was integral to Julia’s. And the dual timeline wove together.
In one sense, he doesn’t fit in this story. He belongs in some cozy town, having breakfast at Luke’s Diner alongside the Gilmore Girls. But that’s not where he lands. Somehow he made his way into my book instead. He makes a place in the story he finds himself in, and the Unfixed world is better for it. In his own sweet, clueless way, he endears others to him over time.
But don’t take my word for it. Order Unfixed now and see for yourself.

Ah. I didn’t have enough back story on Max. But he sounds much like Sam Melvin, a small town reporter, working where he grew up in small town Illinois. He’s my main character from my book, Zombie Turkeys.
Yes, Max and Sam Melvin do have some similarities there!
